GARANCE DEBERT (FR) is an artist based in Brussels. Her performances, situated at the intersection of mime and video, embrace anachronisms and are imbued with expressiveness, the grotesque, and a sense of emptiness. Situated between vulnerability and virtuosity, they subvert the codes of mime to question the ways in which meaning emerges and propose the body as an archival surface. For her, speculation is an eco-responsible narrative tool that allows for the establishment of an “empathic transmission” and for evocation without the need to produce.
Trained as a classical and contemporary dancer, she first earned a Diplôme National Supérieur de Danseur at the Centre National de Danse Contemporaine in Angers before obtaining a master’s degree in visual arts at the École de Recherche Graphique in Brussels. Her work has been presented at institutions such as La Balsamine (Bxl), Le studio Thor (Bxl), Le Grand Café Saint-Nazaire, KIOSK (Ghent), WIELS, and CCSTROMBEEK, and independent art centers such as Sb34, Ateliers Mommen, Project(ion) room, Le Lac, and See U (on the Brussels scene).
She also leads curatorial projects focused on performance, such as L’Opéra Discret, an experimental laboratory and performance-based exhibition space established in 2022.
